When a job only lives in one person's hands, it walks out the door the day they do.

Job Instruction gets that know-how out of one head and into every trained hand on the floor.

The method

Four steps that work on any job.

Before they train anyone, leaders break the job down into important steps, key points and the reasons behind them. Then they teach it in four steps.

01

Prepare the worker

Put them at ease, find out what they already know and get them interested in the job.

02

Show them the job

Tell, show and exaggerate the important steps, key points and the reasons behind them.

03

Have them do the job

They do it and explain it back while the leader corrects, until you know they know.

04

Follow up

Give them a task, name who they go to for help, check often, then taper off.
